Herbacin Kamille + Glycerine hand cream

Hand creams, I believe, are the most underrated grooming products. How often do you shake someone’s hand and feel like they’ve chafed your fingers with their skin? Or is that you chafing theirs? And with colder weather approaching, you know our skin is just getting drier and rougher. To be honest, I often forget about the condition of my hands and, thankfully, due to some rigorous rock climbing this past weekend that left my hands hard and in poor form (with blisters and such), it easily reminded me that treatment was necessary. Herbacin Kamille + Glycerine hand cream brought me back to good shape—but very slowly.

Herbacin Kamille+ Glycerin is not the best hand cream out there (I’m still devoted to Jack Black Hand Healer) but it works fine if you want soft hands. It’s primarily glycerin, which is moisturizing and found in soaps. It shores up the skin’s natural protection by filling up the intercellular matrix and attracting enough water to maintain the skin’s homeostasis. So moisturized hands are definitely assured. Right behind glycerin in the ingredients is hydrogenated palm glyceride, which functions primarily as an emollient. But it’s also chockfull of chemicals (even two alcohols) and silicone (which does help protect from environmental factors).

The only herbal ingredient is chamomile extract, which is soothing but there’s nothing here that really repairs (only the emollients for moisturizing, which is the fundamental root of of the problem). If they had thrown in some vitamin A and E, it would definitely factor out unnecessary ingredients but there’s nothing about this hand cream that really does anything but moisturize (scratch that.. the chamomile does help heal and restore but as it is all alone in that department, you’ll have to keep reapplying). It’s a little greasy at first but then naturally absorbs into your skin within ten minutes or so, and it does have a very subtle herbal fragrance.

Like I said, it’s not bad for daily use but if you’re going to do some rigorous activity with your hands (like rock climbing or gardening or gym) I’d shoot for something with more benefits rather than soothing and moisturizing.
