With so much concern over our skin, we tend to forget about oral care (at least I do!). I can easily admit that I haven’t been educated on oral care other than my dentist telling me to brush twice a day and floss daily. His orders don’t stick all the time. Floss daily? Sometimes I do, sometimes I don’t (heavy on the latter). I don’t really think about my teeth unless it becomes something unavoidable. Like when buying a new toothbrush. Good Lord. There’s so many different kinds (don’t you remember when there was just a standard toothbrush) I can stand in the aisle for hours trying to determine what’s going to best.
But when it comes to toothpaste, I don’t give it much thought. Sure, I go for cinnamon rather than mint (flavor presence) and I tend to go organic. Again, not much thought put into toothpaste but when I ended up at the toothpaste aisle at my nearby health food store, I was again presented with several options.
Because I’m familiar with the Thera Neem brand, I opted to check it out. After all, neem is multipurpose and I’ve been completely satisfied for what it’s done for my face.
I tried out the toothpaste and it’s quite lovely ! My mouth feels fresh for hours. There’s tons of certified, organic ingredients here (90% to be exact). I don’t have any oral problems (knock on wood) but the therapeutic properties of neem are ideally suited. For one, it’s soothing, cooling and astringent. This means when you have periodontal inflammation or a cold/cankor sore, this helps big time. Furthermore, clinical studies indicate neem bark in particular helps reduce the bacteria that causes plaque formation (and this stuff is absolutely disgusting as I had discovered on a recent trip to the dentist).
My only concern would be the lack of fluoride in the toothpaste. As in there is none. Fluoride, as you know, prevents tooth decay, so not having this really worries me. But then, you have to stop and ask yourself: how much flouride do you actually need? Fluoride naturally exists in water sources so we’re already receiving it. And there’s so much debate on overexposure to fluoride it’s again one of those subjects that will always be argued.
You have to weigh your options in this case: neem has so many benefits in this toothpaste, as does fluoride in general. But knowing water fluoridation is an effective method helps sway my decision. A fluoride rinse is also an option for those who want to go fluoride toothpaste free.

Umm, Jimmy… if you hop on the oil pulling wagon- that kills all oral bacteria that leads to tooth decay, thus, eliminating the need to worry whether your toothpaste contains flouride. Plus flossing is easier by far; after a while you actually (at least I do) want to do it just to see how white those pearlies can actually get =).
I’m always on the lookout, now, for *the* organic toothpaste. Thanks for posting this. Sounds promising. ~jk
