Me Bath Spa- reviewed and rejected

I recently scored a clutch of products made by Me Bath Spa, the Me Bath Body Icing Chocoholic ($24) Bath Ice Cream ($32) and Gotta Have It Body Wash ($16). I find the Me Bath brand – and the products, for that matter – perplexing. Me Bath supposedly started out selling at the farmer’s market in San Francisco and, we are told, has now gravitated to posh hotels and spas. Based on this information, you could be forgiven for thinking that Me Bath is ‘natural’ or upmarket, or both. In fact, it is neither.

Me Bath Spa playfully exploits the theme of ice cream (products come in scoops and tubs). However, few of the ingredients are good enough to eat.

The best of the Me Bath bunch is the Bath Ice Cream. These scoop shaped takes on bath salts are, despite the array of chemical colors, mostly natural. The sugar and spice and all things nice includes kukui nut (which I first came across in the Epicuren milk facial cleanser). Also known as candlenut, this is supposed to cure all sorts of skin ailments, from sunburn to eczema; although it must be said that I haven’t yet found any research to back this up.

The Bath Ice Cream raised my expectations for the body lotion, Body Icing Chocoholic. Alas, Me Bath seems to have drifted far away from its farmer’s market roots with this. In marked contrast to the wonderful White Chocolate Body Lotion by Nutra-Lift, which has actual organic white chocolate, the only thing chocolaty is provided by chemical fragrance and it doesn’t even smell like chocolate. It is more the sickly sweet smell of cotton candy. There is a smattering of vitamins and shea butter, otherwise its all emollients and thickeners.

The Body Wash doesn’t quite live up to its billing as a “rich blend of exotic extracts”. True, there is pomegranate, red clover and evening primrose. There are also potential irritants in the form of sodium laureth sulfate, coco betaine, DMDM hydantoin,  and oleamide DEA.

All in all, Me Bath is the triumph of fun over form.
