I was really surprised to discover that the last Five Best eye cream update was in the summer of 2009. Since then, there have been some new good finds and its also nice to know that Your Best Face Correct and Optyma by Dermophisiologique (Optyma is $87 the TIA store) are still in active use in my bathroom cabinet. The notable new additions to the Five Best eye cream ranks are IS Clinical, Osmotics’ relatively new Renovage (in the TIA store) with its high tech ingredients for extending cell life (one of them, teprenone is also in YBF Correct), and  a blast from my past (its such fun to go shopping in one’s bathroom cabinet) is DermaRadiant’s keenly priced Ageless Eyes ($28.79 on sale in the TIA store).

Eyelash growth products with prostaglandins almost all work, but all too often cause side effects, as our readers have reported with, for example, Lilash, such as severe irritation and even hair sprouting in cheeks. Our Five Best picks – Hydropetide (available at the TIA shop) Folligen (available at the TIA shop), Marini Lash, Dermalash and Keracyte-B – are prostaglandin free and we have tested them and know that they work on lashes and eyebrows.

Looking back at our last Five Best eye creams (November 2008), it is good see that it is still a strong list. And it’s good to know that we can better it. Having said that, despite tough new competitors, YBF’s Correct (quelle surprise) stays the course. High fives to YBF, while we welcome the latest to lift brows, banish dark circles and fade crow’s feet. Please suggest your own favorites and make requests for us to get stuff in to review. Here at Nerd’s Corner, we continue our stupendously popular series on the Five Best anti-aging ingredients (so far we’ve done cutting edge peptides straight from the lab and high performing botanical oils). Now we are rounding up berry and leaf extracts. We’ll keep updating this series as we get more knowledgeable, but for now here is a fistful of nature’s bounty to scrutinize the ingredients list for.

    Pomegranate

As Claire put it in her (typically thorough) post on all things pomegranate, if anything deserves to be called a super fruit, this does. Pomegranate is a rich source of conjugated fatty acids (of which punicic acid is the most common) and polyphenol compounds (such as anthocynidins and the powerful, miraculous ellagic acid) that lend the fruit potent antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and free radical scavenging abilities – higher than that of green tea and red wine.

My shopping habits have changed so dramatically that can honestly say I have checked into spending rehab. The time I spend away from my credit card is less painful than I would have thought. Sure, I have withdrawal symptoms, but I am also beginning to welcome the zen-like calm of a life that doesn’t scream OMG, I have to have that (think shoes, bags, latest miracle cream) right now and I mean now. Having said all that, it struck me the other day that there are some of my anti-aging products that are worth every cent and will be replenished the minute I have scraped very precious drop from them. Recession Be Damned.

Take a look at some of my can’t live withouts and drop a few hints to your loved one as Valentine’s Day approaches.
