First I would like to say how appreciative I am for having the opportunity to try kaplanMD’s Day Cream SPF15 and Replenishing Night Cream and to note that this role is more difficult then it may seem! Second, I’d like to apologize for the delayed response for which several things contributed:

1- The products happened to arrive while I was out of town for two weeks.

2- I originally wanted to give it a six week trial so I could provide as much info as possible for the wonderful TIA supporters, but after re-reading the interview with Dr. Stuart H. Kaplan during which he made clear that these products are not an “instant result” based line but rather “lifestyle products,” meant for long-term use to change the way our skin transitions, I felt even six weeks was not enough.

I was very glad to have the opportunity to try Melvita’s Huile d’Argan during the past month or so as it’s arrival in my mailbox dovetailed with an argan oil I’d already been testing off and on for nearly two months. Having two different brands of oil on my make-up table made me feel so awash in this precious liquid that I could slather it on without considering the cost.

By now the history of Argan oil is well known to most beauty junkies. It comes from a (now protected) tree primarily found in Morocco – though orchards are now being grown in places like Israel – that can survive up to 250 years against drought, intense heat, and poor, rocky soil. Despite this environment, the tree produces a fruit, the fruit contains a pit, and inside the pit are seeds from which the oil is extracted. You can imagine how healthy those small seeds are to support the life of the tree for so long in such harsh conditions.

One of the disadvantages of international travel (yes, there are disadvantages!) are the long-haul flights which leave your skin so dry you wish they could invent a cream that would replenish the moisture instantly. Well, I don’t see this happening any day, but the closest thing I found so far is Borage Dry Skin Therapy 24-hour repair cream by Shikai ($12.69).

Borage 24-Hour Repair Cream is another indie underdog I discovered at Whole Foods. Seeing that they specialize in dry skin, I thought it would be a good idea to try it out when my skin felt incredibly parched (whether from flying, long hours in the sun, whenever). Borage 24-Hour Repair Cream absorbed instantly without a hint of greasiness. And, as you would expect from a company that specializes in dry skin, left my skin pretty moisturized… for the 24 hours promised!

I recently tried out a combo of sample products from Lily Organics, a line that uses all natural organic ingredients without synthetics. I tried out their Nourishing Facial Cleanser, Organic Rose Facial Toner, Rejuvenating Enzyme Mask and Organic Moisturizing Cream. While I can’t say I loved each and every product, I did feel like their mask/moisturizer combo has made a big difference in how soft my skin feels. I’ve been using it before bed and waking up to incredibly soft skin with a glow. The cleanser and toner seem to give me only a light clean — for someone who wears concealer and sometimes foundation during the day, I need a little more than that! As great as the mask and moisturizer are though, I do have a one complaint – they don’t smell all that great. But if you can get over that, I feel the two are quite effective. Here are my likes and gripes of each product:

Nourishing Facial Cleanser ($16.39 for 3.4 fl oz): Rejected

The first thing I thought when I used this was how overpowering the smell of witch hazel was. The cleanser is non-foaming, and a little on the slimy side. It does have soothing almond oil soap, and brightening lemon juice, but it also contains lavender and tree tea oil (two ingredients that according to the book Toxic Beauty which I reviewed recently should NOT be going on your face). I felt like I only got a superficial clean instead of a deep cleaning I normally prefer.

“Perfect” is a subjective word. What I call perfect weather (cloudy with a cool breeze by day, thunderstorm at night) would make a summer beachgoer curse the sky. But a perfect complexion – now that’s something where we can all find some common ground…in the form of flawless, glowing, youthful skin. Is one product capable of delivering complexion perfection for all skin tones and types?
