I was recently introduced to the Kaplan MD line of antiaging cosmetics and I’ll be writing more on the full range and the approach behind it in future posts. In the meantime, I have been getting acquainted with the Lip 20 Treatment ($30), a lip plumper with Dr Kaplan’s signature tally of ten antiaging actives.

The first thing to say about Lip 20 is that it does plump the lips. Mine are thinner than a snake’s when left to their own devices and lip plumpers generally don’t work or are uncomfortable. When I looked up into the mirror after applying Lip 20, I couldn’t help but break into a big grin. My lips were pleasantly full, darker and smooth. This is a look I could get used to.

Valentine’s Day gives us the perfect excuse to bring together our favorite lip products. This selection will give you sexy lips all your round. We love Revolution Organics Lip Glosses as they are natural and tres glam (they are available in the TIA store). For a lip plumper we have selected one of our Five Best, Skinn Lip 3X Volumizing Serum, and for antiaging, there is Baci-Baci from La Bella Donna, one of our Five Best lip products with Matrixyl. To keep lips looking young, YBF’s Define is a necessity. For fun, test your mood with DuWop Private Red lipstick – it could be love.

Italian brand, Dermophisiologique, makes a very good eye cream called Optyma – in fact it is one of our Five Best. So I was excited to try out a lip balm from the Optyma range called Lip Perfect ($18). When I tried it out, I liked the rich, but not greasy texture and it was immediately soothing and hydrating.

What makes this standout amongst other lip balms is something called Tinosorb. I once described this as a sun protection ingredient that might actually work and it was approved some time ago in the EU and Australia. Tinosorb is a broad spectrum sunscreen and it is unique amongst chemical sunscreens in that it both absorbs and reflects like the inorganic filters such as zinc and titanium. But the thing that makes Tinosorb (its chemical name is bemotrizinol and the individual ingredients are listed by Optyma: listed below as bis-ethylhexyloxyphenol methoxyphinyl triazine) special is that it is extremely stable, whereas many other sunscreen actives are decidely not.

Thanks to Copley, we were recently introduced to Greenstations ThermaSkin Natural Skin Therapy for itchy and inflamed skin and, as I result, I have now got to know the brand’s Skin Repair Stick ($19) and ThermaScalp Therapy ($14.89) . All three products share the ThermaSkin trademarks of convenient packaging for on-the-go users and a simple mix of botanicals and emollients.

The Skin Repair Stick can be used anywhere to target fine lines or dry skin. I’ve been rubbing it on the backs of my hands and around the cuticles, on a small patch of dry skin on my arm and as a lip chap stick. Used for the latter, the shape – wider than a typical chap stick – is a bit unwieldy, but I love what the formula does to my lips. Cayenne pepper gives an instant warming tingle that is most welcome on a cold day and quickly subsides to provide a non-greasy soothing, protective layer.

I recently got the opportunity to test Skin Actives Lip Trio set ($18.50). I was psyched to give this trio a try since I’m all about lip health. And from my experience, almost anything I put on my lips has the end result of just drying them out.

This set consists of Skin Actives top three lip health products. Liquid Rainbow, which claims to be a moisturizing anti-oxidant protection, Lip Collagen Serum, which boasts the ability to build and maintain collagen specifically formulated for lips, and finally the Lip Balm, which is also a moisturizer with anti-oxidant protection.

The packaging for this brand seems a bit cheap and homemade, which is fine by me if it means a smaller brand, producing smaller lots of product hopefully with more personal care.  Although I’m not above judging a book by its cover, what I really wanted to know was what’s inside these little bottles with big promises (“The most nutritive, moisturizing lip care product available on the market” Liquid Rainbow,  “Our serum will provide your lips with nutrients and growth factors that will improve health and looks” Collagen Lip Serum).
