100% Pure is one of those brands that I want to like, but have always felt that it was a little bit too gentle – well, if I’m honest, namby pamby. Nice botanicals, nothing nasty, but not much of an antiaging oomph. Although I recently started using and like the Cranberry Cleanser and Kim raves about their fruit pigment-based makeup, I had mentally tagged them as a nice range for 30-somethings. The only way I was going to put my prejudice to the test would be try out the self-proclaimed heavy hitter, 100% Pure’s 100% Potent Mushroom & Peptide Antioxidant Concentrate ($39).

For the first couple of weeks, I was patting my prejudice on the back for yet another prescient insight. 100% Potent Mushroom was nice, but there was no indication that much was happening. Thankfully, I stuck with it and I must say that this is a lovely skin conditioner. It moisturizers, firms the skin and plays very nicely with other products.

When I hear “serum”, I think runny…slimy…sticky. I think of an oftentimes unpleasant base layer in my beauty regime which typically neither moisturizes nor provides SPF protection. And I think of suffering short-term discomfort for long-term benefits. Perhaps I’ve been hanging with the wrong serum crowd, because I was just introduced to a new product by Wilava that fits none of these descriptions. Wilava’s Vitamin C Serum is somehow airy, agreeable, and satisfying all at the same time. Instead of filling in as an added step, this serum stands on its own while thoroughly moisturizing, protecting, and improving the look and feel of skin.

I have been using Olive’s Organic Botanicals Pomegranate Facial Replenisher Cleanser (available at the TIA store for $57.49)for the last month and I love it! The cleanser is housed in an old fashioned amber apothecary bottle with a dropper to dispense. The smell of the product is innocuous but hints of an oil of some sort are evident.

The ingredients of the cleanser are: organic saponified olive oil, organic coconut oil, organic jojoba oil, organic aloe vera, organic rosemary extract, and 100% pure, organic cold pressed/unrefined oil from certified organic pomegranate seeds. I like this wash because my face feels and looks “really” clean after I use it.

The instructions on the charming bottle read that you should first massage a small amount of product all over. I used it on my face, neck, and chest, then allowed it to sit for one minute. I then lathered, washed with warm water, and rinsed the creamy solution away.

January was a month of bad complexion karma. Whether due to incompatible products or inclement indoor conditions, my skin let me know that it was not happy. Scaly patches below my mouth battled with relentless flakes on my nose for the title of driest place on my face. My standard daily and nightly moisturizers were no longer cutting it. Using lightweight lotions could not conceal swathes of flaking skin, while layering various creams resulted in gunky residue that made applying makeup impossible. Once Punxsutawney Phil the groundhog saw his shadow- thus forecasting another six weeks of winter- my dry skin plight became more desperate than ever.

We are currently developing a nifty Truth In Aging iPhone app that will help you remember what all those unpronounceable ingredients do when you are in Sephora before a bewildering array of antiaging potions and lotions and squinting at the small print. As I was researching ingredients to include in the app, it struck me that there are some specific antiaging ingredients that could prevent future damage – as opposed to things like copper peptides that go to work on existing damage.

These preventative ingredients would be great to be aware of if you are a 30-something with the tell-tale signs of that first wrinkle. Think about it, with disciplined use, they may help you stay young and beautiful. For those of us who are, well let’s say, not exactly 30 anymore, these actives are also worth looking for as they will help prevent undoing all that hard won repair work we have achieved. So here is a roundup of the most promising SAPs (skin age prevention) that I have spotted.
