It’s the thought that counts, or so they say. Hallmark wants you to believe that a card will keep your Valentine happy. Godiva and Russell Stover probably couldn’t make it through the year without February 14th. But cards, candy, and flowers are so played out. This Valentine’s Day, think outside the heart-shaped box and surprise your loved one with something he or she can really use. We’ll make that easier for you with our picks for the Five Best gifts to spoil your sweetheart and show your creative side.

Ranging in price from $8 to $48, these gifts don’t require a huge commitment, but still send the message that your heart is committed. There are items that you can use together, such as massage oil or fizzy bath tablets. There are tools and treatments for staying soft and well-moisturized. And there is a brand-new hair care gadget by our favorite celebrity hairstylist. Each gift is equally useful for a male or female recipient. If you want to prove that you are truly an expert on pampering, also check our gift guide for the Five Best beauty products worth the splurge.

Beer is no longer just a frosty beverage for relaxing and refreshing the body. Cleansing with beer can actually add body to your hair. As we’ve seen in the many ways it is believed beer can help your hair, there are special components within beer- including B vitamins, wheat proteins, and maltose sugars- that make drinking a bottle less useful than pouring it on your head. The complex carbohydrates in beer have a hydrating effect, while proteins coat each strand, giving them more strength and elasticity. Not only does hair appear shinier in the short term, but it also becomes stronger to avoid long-term breakage.

Throughout awards season, the glitz and glamor of Hollywood is nearly inescapable. So it is refreshing to know that some stars forego the hair and makeup chair in favor of natural beauty treatments. Catherine Zeta-Jones counts washing her hair in beer among her favorite homegrown beauty secrets, even if it leaves her smelling like the bottom of a beer barrel for days. Coming from the woman who has been crowned celebrity with the “best dressed” hair, a beer shampoo seems like a promising hair savior.

Rinse-off hair conditioners still have some way to go before they are as good as the stuff we put on our face. But we are managing to track down some good finds and our stash is getting better and better. So good, in fact, that it was time to update our Five Best. The closest thing to a serum for your hair might be Nutra-Lift Daily Moisture Hair Conditioner , while Osmotics has a vitamin-packed conditioner, FNS Revitalizing Conditioner (both are stocked in the TIA store), that helps grow healthy hair. For chemically colored tresses, try Aubrey Organics and you will learn to love your curls with Aveda Be Curly. For just about anyone, but particularly bears with sore heads, you can’t go wrong with Max Green Alchemy.

It has barely been six months since our first Five Best shampoos, but it is already woefully out of date. That’s actually a good thing because it means that we’ve had lots of good finds. In fact, I was hard pushed to narrow it down to only five (we should be able to create future Five Bests on shampoo sub-categories such as shampoos that thicken hair). The new Five Best brings you Nutra-Lift and FNS (available in our store), Tropical RainMax Green Alchemy and Komenuka.

Highly commendeds that didn’t quite make Five Best, were BeeceuticalsLatherNutra-Lift Goat Milk, and Suki.

Let me be straight. I do not have curly hair. At a certain length it ripples and when I grow it towards my shoulders it forms soft waves. Any longer and it becomes pitifully limp. And as a Caucasian, I can’t advise anyone with or aspiring to dreadlocks. I have, after years of experimentation and my new found wisdom as the result of researching for Truth In Aging, come up with a variety of solutions to give me a boost on limp days and tame when its humid. Plus I’ve had some great tips from my more tousled-haired friends.
