True story: My mom’s hair went gray for good at seventeen. Ever since, she has waged a two-fold war on color-treated tresses and moisture-sapped strands. Decades of this vicious cycle has taken a sorry toll on the health of her hair. Fortunately, my thick, blond locks have not suffered the same fate…at least not yet. But I don’t want to wait until my occasional trip to the salon for highlights leads to full-blown hair dehydration and scalp irritation. As an anti-aging preventative, I turned to the Rejuve3 Hair and Scalp System, ostensibly used by haircare professionals for over 40 years and made readily available to the public in the past few months. Chris Rock has been making the rounds to promote his new documentary “Good Hair,” about the seriously complicated hair care customs of the African-American community. His film delves into the $9-billion industry that has evolved around this culture’s attainment of the “European” look, since the natural nappy look just isn’t cutting it. According to some reviews, the most entertaining aspect of “Good Hair” is its investigation of the history and practice of hair relaxers, which commonly use sodium hydroxide. My co-worker, Jeremy, came into work the other day with a hilarious, yet unsettling, story about his three-year old daughter, Hannah. Hannah is a precocious child with an expansive vocabulary and an adorable understanding of how the world works. While sitting on the floor with Jeremy during their regular morning play routine, Hannah stopped what she was doing, reached up to touch the top of his head and said, “Daddy, your hair is going to heaven like Grandpa’s!” After laughing at Hannah’s wonderfully innocent statement and Jeremy’s subsequent embarrassment, I looked around my work area and noticed the abundance of hair accumulated under the keys on my keyboard and around the carpet under my seat. Surveying this battlefield scattered with fallen hair soldiers, I thought, “Is my hair going to heaven, too?” Read more...

I started liking my hair after the invention of the flat iron, so I was excited to be able to review the new Hana Mini Flat Iron. I was intrigued by the ingenious design in which a standard sized 8″ long flat iron could collapse to a compact 5″ length for travel. The Hana Mini has a fixed heat of 410° F, tourmaline ceramic 5/8″ width plates, and a 6 foot salon swivel cord. There is an on/off switch and a red light that glows when the iron is on. It comes with a cute zippered silver travel bag and a metal container to store it.
Now to put the Hana Mini to the real test! My hair is very coarse, extremely thick, and naturally frizzy. If a flat iron can transform my hair into luxurious, silky, shiny hair that resists humidity, then it is a winner! Read more...
