Fumaria Officinalis (Fumitory)
* A plant-derived botanical often used to treat acne
Functions:
Fumaria Officinalis is found in a plant and can be used to treat eruptive skin diseases such as eczema. It contains alkaloids, potassium salts, and tannins and is also a major source of fumaric acid; fumaric acid is created naturally by the skin when it is exposed to sunlight and is used by cells to produce energy (Wikipedia). Fumitory has traditionally been used to treat irritated skin, as a digestive tonic, and in sclerosis of the liver.
Safety Measures/Side Effects:
Although there are no documented side effects of Fumaria Officinalis, one study was cited from 1987 warning that it was poisonous. However, this study could not be found and was only referenced once. Fumitory is generally considered a safe botanical that occurs naturally and is gentle to the skin.
Notably, if ingested in large doses, it can cause diarrhea.
