    Zinc Stearate

    * A lubricant

    Functions:

    Zinc Stearate is a zinc soap known for repelling water, and is used in the cosmetics and personal care industries as a lubricant. It is an insoluble salt made of commercial stearic acid, a mild fatty acid used as an emollient and lubricant, and is often combined with zinc oxide. Zinc Stearate is thought to have astringent and antiseptic properties, although there is little research to support this regardig Zinc Stearate specifically; zinc, however, is known to have antibacterial and antiviral properties. Zinc Stearate is used to impart gloss in some industrial uses, and may exhibit this property in cosmetics and personal care products as well (Wikipedia).

    Zinc Stearate is FDA and CIR approved.

    Safety Measures/Side Effects:

    Zinc Gluconate

    * A biocide or deodorant agent, possible acne treatment

    * Also known as Zincum Gluconium

    Functions:

    Zinc Gluconate is the zinc salt of gluconic acid, and is thought to be an antiviral agent or cosmetic biocide, used in cosmetics and personal care products most frequently as an acne treatment. Zinc Gluconate is also thought to speed wound healing and prevent scarring by assisting the body in processing essential fatty acids used by the skin for healing (AcneToHealth.com).

    According to a study published in Dermatology, acne sufferers were treated with zinc, or the antibiotic minocycline. “332 patients received either 30 milligrams elemental zinc or 100 milligrams minocycline over 3 months … Minocycline and zinc gluconate are both effective in the treatment of inflammatory acne, but minocycline has a superior effect evaluated to be 17% in our study” (CosmeticsCop.com). Ultimately, Zinc Gluconate is thought to be an effective acne treatment, because of its antiviral properties, or its ability to kill bacteria. However, most studies done on Zinc Gluconate’s effectiveness are based on oral supplements, rather than topical application.
