I recently got a six-piece mini Fusion Beauty LipFusion gloss set as a gift and have been using them for a couple of months now. They’re supposed to be plumpers without the sting of the more traditional ones, like DuWop’s Lip Venom, which contain cinnamon oil and other irritants to get that swollen, “just stung” look (and can feel just as painful).

These particular ones have also been touted as the first “needle-free, micro-injected collagen lip enhancer.” On their website, they go on to say that they use collagen, dehydrated into tiny microspheres that could penetrate and then re-plump with the body’s natural water.

I first noticed that the color upon first application is a lot more distinct than I thought it would be. It’s a very pretty glaze with a slight citrusy taste. There was no stinging sensation at all. My lips did feel and look a tad smoother and fuller, but I wasn’t crazy about a few things.

First, it’s not very long lasting. I usually apply several times throughout the night. Second, it doesn’t spread as easily as I would have liked and a bit on the sticky side, so if your lips are already dry, it’s not the best idea to coat it with this first. My lips end up just as dry instead of moisturized after it rubs off later as well.

As far as ingredients go, the main ones include polybutene (a waxy additive), pentaerythrity tetraisostearate and silica silylate which I didn’t find to be notably harmful and have low hazard scores according to the Cosmetic Database. We also fine mica, an ingredient used to add a pearlescent sheen to a lot of products, which is not recommended for people with sensitive skin or allergy- and acne-prone skin.

They also contain a few parabens (propylparaben, isopropylparaben, isobutylparaben, and butylparaben), a preservative that mimic your body’s own hormones that can interfere with your body’s endocrine system (your hypothalamus, ovaries, thyroid, etc.). So it’s advised that regular use products with parabens – often found in shampoos and lotions as well – should be regulated.

It says that the results last 48 hours, which I can’t say I noticed myself and I’m not convinced that just one application would give these results anyway.
I do like that these ‘mini’ sizes are easy to carry around and don’t take up a lot of room in your purse. It’s perhaps a good gloss for a little more fullness, thought I’m not sure if I’ll keep shelling out $38 (which is how much the full size glosses cost a pop) every time I need to reload. But, then again, I don’t think my lips don’t need much plumping power right now so it could be worth if you feel you do.

Ingredients
Polybutene, Mineral Oil, Pentaerythrityl Tetraisostearate, Silica Silylate, Triisostearyl Citrate, Mica, Ricinus Communis Seed Oil, Flavor, Silica Dimethyl Silylate, Sodium Chondroitin Sulfate, Atelocollagen (fish source), Butylene Glycol, Sodium Saccharin, Titanium Dioxide, Propylparaben, Isopropylparaben, Isobutylparaben, Butylparaben.

When I learned that bauble maker Tarina Tarantino (she of the pink hair) had branched into the cosmetic world, I feared the worst. Behind her signature sparkle would doubtless be a chemical waste dump. But when I took a look at her Gem Gloss ($19), I found that this lip gloss – although tarnished by a couple of things – is a pretty good formula overall.

For a start, it avoids potentially irritating and comedogenic mineral oil by using the synthetic alternative, polysibutene. Even the chemical-sounding octyldodecyl stearoyl stearate, is a naturally occurring fatty acid and used in skin care products as a skin conditioning and viscosity increasing agent. After a bunch of predictable (this is a lip gloss after all) and benign waxes, there are some things that your lips will find worth licking.

Sunflower (with its linoleic acid and vitamin E), soy (essential amino acids) and yeast (antioxidant) put Gem Gloss a cut above your average lip gloss. But the good things don’t stop there. Check out the hydrating agent ceramide-3 and lecithin, a natural emulsifyer and one of the most important components of cells. Unfortunately, lecithin is typically unstable in cosmetics – unless hydrolized, which it does not appear to be here.

The blurb on Gem Gloss goes on about plumping spheres (I disregard this as marketing BS) and exfoliants. The latter is a little mystery as I haven’t managed to work out which of the ingredients would do that job.

The only things I wish Tarina had avoided are ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate, a sunscreen known to produce excess reactive oxygen species, and the irritant and toxin, phenoxyethanol. Other than that, Gem Gloss is a credit to her celebrity-loved trinkets. And, not to overlooked, this lip gloss by all accounts (I haven’t tried it myself) avoids the ultimate sin of stickiness.

Ingredients

Polyisobutene, Octyldodecyl Stearoyl Stearate, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil , Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil, Euphorbia Cerifera (Candelilla) Wax (Candelilla Cera / Cire de candelilla), Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter), Myristyl Lactate, Copernicia Cerifera (Carnauba) Wax (Cera Carnauba / Cire de carnauba), Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Glycine Soja (Soybean) Seed Extract, Yeast Extract, Tocopheryl Acetate, Lecithin, Ceramide 3, Saccharin, Water (Aqua / Eau), Silica, Acrylates/Carbamate Copolymer, Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate, Myristyl Alcohol, Phenoxyethanol, Flavor (Aroma). +/- 77019 Mica, 77891 Titanium Dioxide, 77491 Iron Oxides, 77492 Iron Oxides, 77499 Iron Oxides,17200 Red 33 Lake,15850 Red 7 Lake,19140 Yellow 5 Lake.

I’ve never really taken to Napoleon Perdis as a brand. The products seem to be undifferentiated, the logo reeks of a gold medallion nestling in a hairy chest, and the NP body scrub has the dubious honor of being the first in its genre that I don’t like (usually I am a pushover when it comes to body scrubs). So I was intrigued to see Napoleon Perdis Devine Goddess lipsticks in Ulta for $22 that boasted being “enriched with herbal extracts and antioxidants”. Perhaps NP was about to win me over.

To be sure, Devine Goddess lipsticks have a dash of Matrixyl (palmitoyl oligopeptide). It also has lemon balm (melissa officinalis) and the good news is that this is also a proven antioxidant. However, given that both come at the end of the ingredient list, I expect the antioxidant quotient to be not much more than angel dusting (as it is known in the trade). As Copley reported, angel dusting is an unfortunately common practice in the cosmetics, cosmeceuticals, and dietary supplement industries. In formulating a product, certain suspect manufacturers incorporate a miniscule portion of an active ingredient, insufficient to produce any measurable benefit.

There isn’t anything else in Devine Goddess that will pamper your pout and, although most everything is benign, there are a couple of things that might make it pucker. BHT is a suspected carcinogen, propylparaben also carries a (controversial) stigma of being carcinogenic and it can certainly be an irritant.

Ingredients

Diisostearyl malate, lanolin oil, Tridecyl Trimellitate, Octyldodecanol, Polybutene, Polyethylene, microcrystalline wax (cera Microcristallina), propylparaben, dicalcium phosphate, flavour (aroma), Zea Mays (corn ) oil, Ethylhexyl palmitate, Bht, Tribehenin, Sorbitan Isostearate, Palmitoyl Oligopeptide, Melissa Officinalis Leaf Extract.

I was recently introduced to the Kaplan MD line of antiaging cosmetics and I’ll be writing more on the full range and the approach behind it in future posts. In the meantime, I have been getting acquainted with the Lip 20 Treatment ($30 and now in the TIA shop), a lip plumper with Dr Kaplan’s signature tally of ten antiaging actives.

The first thing to say about Lip 20 is that it does plump the lips. Mine are thinner than a snake’s when left to their own devices and lip plumpers generally don’t work or are uncomfortable. When I looked up into the mirror after applying Lip 20, I couldn’t help but break into a big grin. My lips were pleasantly full, darker and smooth. This is a look I could get used to.

No humble lip plumper, Lip 20 Treatment has rather a lot going on. FIrst, I’ll deal with the fact that it comes in a a couple of colors as well as completely sheer. It also has a most unusual container that is twisted to flip open a hinged lid. It got me quite flustered for a few minutes and I ended up breaking the tip of the lip product. Still, it puts the packaging in the realm of gizmo and makes the versions without color eminently appealing to guys.

The plumping job is achieved by sodium hyaluronate in the form of patented molecules that easily penetrate the skin. Hyaluronate’s moisturizing power is backed up by shea butter and squalane. Another important ingredient is seabuckthorn (hippophae rhamnoides), which has loads of quercetin. The thing about quercetin is that it may be a much more of a powerful antioxidant than was previously thought. Cornell University has a new way of measuring antioxidant potency called ‘cellular antioxidant activity’ (CAA) that tests the antioxidant activities of a compound inside the cell itself. This is an approach that is deemed to be more accurate. Of all the flavenoids, quercetin had the highest CAA value.

One of Kaplan MD’s signature ingredients is black cohosh root extract. This is a source of plant-derived estrogen and is used as antiaging ingredient. Estrogen or estrogen mimicking ingredients (such as parabens) in cosmetics are a little controversial with one doctor making the link between them and cancer. This work remains uncorroborated and did not deal specifically with plant-derived estrogen.

Specifically discussing black cohosh (note that mostly it is used as an oral supplement for menstrual and menopausal issues), the Mayo Clinic says: ”The mechanism of action of black cohosh remains unclear and the effects on estrogen receptors or hormonal levels (if any) are not definitively known. Recent publications suggest that there may be no direct effects on estrogen receptors, although this is an area of active controversy.”

Talking of controversy, I always approach chemical sunscreen ingredients with caution. Of the three chosen here, octisalate seems to be perfectly safe, while the other two can be unstable and octonixate should, perhaps, be avoided by pregnant women (the estrogen issue again). You can read about octinoxate and the other two sunscreen actives in our article that summarizes some of the research.

Sunscreen actives: Octinoxate 7.5%, Octisalate 5%, Octocrylene 3%

Other ingredients: Polyglyceryl-2 Diisostearate, Hydrogenated Polyisobutene, Euphorbia Cerifera (Candelilla) Wax, Polyethylene, Beeswax, Oleyl Alcohol, Phenyl Trimethicone, C10-30 Cholesterol/Lanosterol Esters, Ethylhexyl Palmitate, VP/Hexadecene Copolymer, Aroma (Natural Peppermint), Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter), Squalane, Glyceryl Triacetyl Hydroxystearate, Hippophae Rhamnoides (Seabuckthorn Berry) Extract, Soy Isoflavones, Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Seed Extract, Cimicifuga Racemosa (Black Cohosh) Root Extract, Eupatorium Rebaudianum Bertoni Leaf Extract, Atelocollagen, Sodium Hyaluronate, Silica, Tribehenin, Lecithin, Water (Aqua), Polysorbate 20, Polysorbate 80, Sorbitan Isostearate, Palmitoyl Oligopeptide, Carbomer, Sodium Chondroitin Sulfate, Glycerin, PEG-8, Tocopherol, Ascorbyl Palmitate, Retinyl Palmitate, Silica Dimethyl Silylate, Caprylyl Glycol, Butylene Glycol, Ascorbic Acid, Citric Acid, [+/-: Mica (CI 77019), Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891), Iron Oxide (CI 77491, CI 77492, CI 77499), Red 7 Lake (CI 15850:1)

Tarte has finally launched a Lip Stain ($24) based on its wildly popular tarte Cheek Stain. Although tarte is noted for its green credentials (it was one of our Five Best eco friendly makeup companies last year), its marketing people bring a whiff of the lab to this lip gloss with something called “LipSurgence Technology” that is supposed to increase the moisture of our smackers by 6000%.

Whereas the Cheek Stain majors on fruit extracts, Lip Stain has a peptide, palmitoyl heaxapeptide-14. This appears to have been borrowed from tarte Recreate Wrinkle Rewind Techolnogy. There is also salicornia extract, a coastal growing herb (mainly in western Europe) that has strong antioxidant properties.

Otherwise there are couple of waxes (eg cera alba) and around seven oils, including meadowfoam. Meadowform seeds are 60% omega-9 fatty acids. In practice, it behaves like a safe silicone, adding gloss and helping with the retention of moisture.

Unfortunately, tarte has chosen to include a sweetener called stevioside. On the plus side, it has no calories, but it also has a controversial safety record. In the UK, it is not permitted for use in food. There are numerous studies that suggest it is, amongst other things, a reproductive toxin. On the other hand, the WHO declared in 1999 (I couldn’t find anything more recent) that the data wasn’t good enough to say one way or another and there are studies that contend that it is relatively safe.

So, I was pleased to see a holiday gift set of four plumpers called Winter Escapade Buxom Babes ($28).

Everyone likes a lip plumper and as well being relatively benign (as war paint goes), Buxom Babes has a a couple of things that may be good for you. The standout ingredient is Matrixyl, or palmitoyl oligopeptide, a stimulator of collagen and an increasingly fashionable addition to lip products. There is also some vitamin A to keep lips smooth and kissable.

And while we are on that subject, we have just been finding out that there is more to mistletoe than an excuse to make out.

Ingredients

Hydrogenated Polyisobutene, Tridecyl Trimellitate, Polyglyceryl-2 Diisostearate, Octyldodecyl Stearoyl Stearate, Menthone Glycerin Acetal, Vp/Hexadecene Copolymer, Pentaerythrityl Tetraisostearate, Microcrystalline Wax (Cera Microcristallina), Octyldodecanol, Trimethylolpropane Triisostearate, Silica, Fragrance (Parfum), Palmitoyl Oligopeptide, Retinyl Palmitate, Ethylhexyl Palmitate, Tocopheryl Acetate, Tribehenin, Sorbitan Isostearate, Sodium Saccharin, Limonene, Bht.
Who doesn’t want fuller, voluptuous, Angelina Jolie-esque lips? I certainly do, which is why I was delighted to try out the new 3-in-1 lip treatment from Osmotics Cosmeceuticals. Now, I have to fully disclose that I have approached anti-aging lip plumpers in the past with a fair amount of skepticism: without the help of Xanax and a sharp needle in my doctor’s office, I was dubious that I’d be able to see a visible difference in my smile. But I was pleasantly surprised.

These three little wonder-workers (Natural, plus two shades – French Kiss and Cognac) comprise the lip component of the Blue Copper 5 line, started by Osmotics in 1998. Copper, apparently, is quite the magical agent. Long used to heal wounds and scars, scientific smarties soon realized that copper could also be used to help “heal” wrinkles, which, like scars, are a result of uneven collagen deposits and skin cell layering. So by binding the mineral to a peptide (a sophisticated name for protein fragments), Osmotics claims that we’re benefitting from maximum copper absorption and effectiveness, resulting in higher collagen production, and therefore, a prettier pout.

Also helping pave the way to more luscious lips are two powerhouse ingredients: Sodium Hyaluronate, which smooths wrinkles and moisturizes skin by holding 1000 times its weight in water, and hydrogenated polyisobutene (that’s butyl rubber, folks). Not to worry, though – the FDA has approved the use of this polymer in chewing gum.

The twist-pen applicator is easy to use, though the packaging could be a little more elegant, especially at $70 for three tubes. But I have to say that all in all, my lips really did look noticeably plumper, even after just a few days’ use. My friend Laurie, a beauty junkie if ever there was one, detected immediately that my lips looked fuller. “Where’d you get it?” she asked. The ultimate compliment.

Ingredients:

Hydrogenated Polyisobutene, Ethylene/Propylene/Styrene Copolymer, Butylene/Ethylene/Styrene Copolymer, Isohexadecane, BIS-PEG/PPG-14/14 Dimethicone, Mineral Oil, Cyclopentasiloxane, Sodium Hyraluronate, Xanthan Gum, Tripeptide-1, Tribehenin, Sorbitan Isotearate, Palmitoyl Oligopeptide, Macadamia Ternifolia Seed Oil, Copper Sulfate, Tocopheryl Acetate, Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate, Ethylhexyl Methoxicinnamate, Squalane, Menthol, Flavor, Titanium Dioxide, Mica

As far as I’m concerned, cosmetics companies that use the word “technology” raise a red flag. It is usually a cover up for lack of any innovation at all. But when I saw DuWop – a makeup brand that I generally like (I recently included DuWop in our Five Best Antiaging Foundations – refer to “mood lipstick technology” in the blurb for its new Private Red lipstick ($22) I was intrigued. After all, DuWop claims (I have no idea if justifiably) to have brought us the world’s first lip plumper.

DuWop promises that, within five minutes, Private Red will metamorphosize into the perfect shade of red for you. I was curious to know how this cosmetic chameleon came about. A cursory look at Private Red’s ingredients list didn’t enlighten me as to how this was achieved, so I took a little diversion down memory lane. It seems that color changing fads have been around for a while Remember “mood rings” in the 70s and stress testers in 80s? They seemed to be reacting to heat, so perhaps Major Red puts a new slant on hot lips.

This turns out not to be true. Nor do mood lipsticks have anything to do with mood. You can perform a simple test at home should the – ahem – mood take you. Dab some Private Red to strips of filter paper. Soak one strip in a dish of vinegar and the strip in a dish of baking soda solution. The colors will magically change. The lipstick is made with weak acid pigments that have a conjugate base form with a strikingly different color (an acid/base indicator).

There turns out to be quite a bit of science in this. Pigments complex molecules with electrons that move freely. This cloud of electrons selectively absorbs only certain wavelengths of light and that gives the pigment its color. When the pigment undergoes an neutralization reaction – due to your pH balance – on the surface of the skin, there’s a sharp change in the structure of the electron cloud. This sharply changes the wavelengths of light that the pigment absorbs, and the color of the lipstick changes.

So now you know. The pigment is reacting to the pH of your skin, something that changes all the time depending on diet, physical activity, where you are in your monthly cycle…..

Anyway, back to DuWop Private Red. There are a couple of other interesting things about it. As well as all the usual colors that’s you would expect to see (think red 7 etc), there are some more unusual ones, at least as far as lipsticks go; henna and annatto, a South American seed used to color food. Be warned that annatto is a very common allergan.

Having thinner lips than a snake, I was attracted by a sumptuous and pouting Eva Longoria in an ad for L’oreal’s new Infallible Six Hour Plumping Lipgloss ($9.95). A lip plumper that lasts more than six minutes, let alone six hours, would be a novelty.

In retrospect, I should have smelled a rat when I went to the L’Oreal website as was assured that the Infallible lip plumper is “virtually painless”. True, plumpers can be a little uncomfortable. But to invoke the word pain was to bring a whole new meaning to bee stung lips.

If there is a sensation, it is likely to come from a harmless ingredient called ethyl menthane carboxamide. This provides a cooling, tingling effect similar to that created by menthol without being menthol. I’m not sure why a synthetic alternative to menthol is deemed necessary, but it is in keeping with the rest of this lip gloss. It even has a synthetic form of mica (fluorphlogopite).

Whilst most of the ingredients are benign (although aluminum is a neurotoxin, the form here - alumina – is thought to be safe because it doesn’t penetrate the skin), the long litany of chemicals is kind of depressing. And there are a couple of things that I wouldn’t want to put near my mouth. The first ingredient is a phenyl silcone, whilst generally considered to be safe is, like all silicones, toxic if ingested. There is some evidence that calcium aluminum borosilicate is carcinogenic, as with the three parabens.

I hope Eva isn’t licking her lips.

Illamasqua, the cool cult, UK brand favored by Sienna Miller, is now inviting Americans to channel their inner night vixen. Rightly coveted for the amazing range of color ways, from pure pigment to the truly original palette of eyeshadows and lipsticks that defy you to fail to find THE shade for you, Illamasqua has launched at Sephora.

Although they are just what every party girl needs, Illamasqua’s true colors show up in the ingredients. There’s nothing to like about Illamasque’s ingredients, but that’s OK – after all, they aren’t positioned as green or makeup that’s good for you. It is strictly war paint and the question is whether there is anything in this brand’s products that you should avoid.

Looking at the lipsticks ($20), I have seen worse. Those with sensitive skins may react to the mineral oil, carmine or polyethelene. The only truly bad ingredient is calcium aluminum borosilicate, a bulking agent that could be potentially carcinogenic.

The eyeshadows present more of an issue (or two). First up is talc, a potential carcinogen that cancer organizations want to see banned from cosmetics. Amongst the colors, there is chromium hydroxide green, which the FDA has only approved for products not intended for the lips. Mineral oil is a potential irritant and there is carmine again. Apart from that it is down to the parabens, which are irritants and xenoestrogens that are associated with cancer.

All in all a mixed makeup bag.
