If you are terrified of breakouts from make up, then it doesn’t get much more natural than Everyday Minerals. This brand actually lists the 28 ingredients (mostly chemicals) it doesn’t include in the foundations, eye shadows and lipsticks. There are only four ingredients, all of them natural: mica, titanium dioxide, iron oxide and zinc oxide. The color palette is subtle and has some unusual shades. Oasis, for example, is a sort of glamorous gold and Diary is a sort of grayish lavender.

Blusher or rouge should be approached with extreme caution, at least in my hands. It is all too easy to end up looking liking Truly Scrumptious in Chitty Chitty Band Bang when she pretends to be a wind-up doll. Not so with Tarte Cheek Stain. This really does leave a translucent hint of color, as though one was – fetchingly, of course – a little flushed. Thankfully, Tarte has brought out Cheek Stain in a new Natural Beauty version that is free from chemicals and has anti-oxidants from five super fruits: goji (also known as wolfberry), acai, maracuja, acerola and pomegranate.

This is a beauty product that is going out of it way to be behave responsibly (although I suppose the packaging will still be hanging around in 2000 years). The fragrance is natural, some shea butter has been added and some grape seed extract. Its practically an anti-aging cream. And not one single paraben or unwanted preservative in sight.

Yves Saint Laurent’s Teint Parfait Complexion Enhancer is one of the those products (rather like YSL’s Touche Eclat) that I always have at least three of (one in the bathroom, one in a purse, one in the drawer of my desk). There isn’t much more to say about it really, other than it simply works: it really does enhance the complexion – as in you look like you, but somewhat more presentable.

You can wear it over foundation, in which case you miraculously look like you aren’t wearing any. Or on its own. I usually take it neat, not being a big foundation person (except for days when I am an emotional wreck and have the self-esteem of a jilted 17-year-old). Teint Parfait is really more of a highlighter than base or foundation; it balances out the the skin tone, warms you up and looks natural.
