It seems that a new eyelash growth product comes on the market with very blink of the eye and the other day, we were asked to take a look at Beauticontrol’s Replenishing Conditioner for Eyelash and Brows ($28.50). With products such as Revitalash or Hydropeptide Lash cornering the premium end with price points at over $100, you can’t quibble about the price of Beauticontrol. And, we are pleased to confirm that it doesn’t use a glaucoma drug as its active ingredient like LiLash or Latisse. But is there anything in it that will work?
The most promising ingredient is biotinoyl tripeptide-1, which shows in OOKISA’s hair thickening products and in the Lilash and Cargo eyelash growth products. It is part of a concoction made by Sederma (the same company makes Matrixyl 3000) for treating alopecia that also includes butylene glycol, PPG-26-buteth-26, PEG-40 hydrogenated castor oil, apigenin, oleanic acid (and) biotinoyl tripeptide-1). According to Sederma, it helps to slow aging effects by lessening the production of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) to improve the irrigation of the hair follicle. Studies (by the company) showed the product to: increase hair growth enhance adhesion molecules stimulate hair strengthening genes increase the proportion of anagen hair
Actually, it might be the only promising ingredient. The most dominant ingredient after water is lupin. The seeds of wild lupins are very high in protein (about 40%) and contain all the essential amino acids. I haven’t found any information about them in relation to hair growth. Artemia is extracted from plankton and has been found to have properties that protect from UV damage and is sometimes incorporated into haircare products to protect chemically colored hair.
To be fair, there is niacinamide, part of the B family of vitamins that are generally considered good for the hair. However, there are some who claim that niacinamide isn’t as useful as niacin.
Note that phenoxyethanol can be an extreme irritant for the eyes, as is – to a lesser extent – benzoic acid.
