Beeceuticals shampoo for shine- reviewed and recommended

Beeceuticals creates as much buzz as possible around the theme of pollinating insects. Its coda is “Health From The Hive” and its Rosemary and Lavender shampoo is called Bee-Hair-Now. Julie and Richie, the couple behind the brand (I wonder if they simply call each other “honey”), give some of their profits to help the plight of bees – the American honey bee is almost extinct due to pesticides.

Bee-Hair-Now shampoo, at about $6.50 for 12 f oz, has got to be one of the bargains of the year. However, at first I thought I might be getting what I’d paid for. It rapidly lathers into a thick foam that feels a bit like the bubbles in bubble bath or, frankly, a cheap shampoo. After rinsing it off, my hair definitely felt the need for some conditioner and I reached for Aubrey Organics’ conditioner for chemically colored hair. The end result was striking. I had been getting product build up from using OOKISA’s shampoo and conditioner and Beeceuticals washed it right away. My hair after blow drying was soft and positively shiny. Parsley extract, a well-known imparter of luster, is responsible for the shine.

The main ingredient is rooibus. Although called red tea, this isn’t a tea at all, but a pea. However, generations of South Africans have imbibed it as a liquid cure-all for everything from skin allergies to HIV-AIDS. It has at least two antioxidants, the flavenoid aspathalin and the polyphenolic called nothofagin. Plus there seems to be plenty of research to support claims that it is a potent antioxidant, perhaps out-doing green tea (which in any case is the next ingredient).

As you would expect, there is honey and royal jelly. But I was interested to see beta glucans. These are called “biological response modifiers” because of their ability to activate the immune system. They are found in yeast and, in this case, mustard seed. In addition to parsley, there is a Scarborough Fair of sage (a traditional method for covering gray hair) rosemary (helpful against dandruff) and thyme (supposedly a hair thickener).

    Ingredients:

Organic Fair Trade Certified™ Rooibos and Organic Fair Trade Certified™ Green Tea (aqueous)*, Organic Parsley Extract, Organic Sage Leaf Extract, Organic Rosemary Extract, Organic Thyme Extract, Lauryl Glucosides, Sodium Methyl Cocoyl Taurate, Cocamidopropyl Betaine (from Coconut Oil), Mustard Seed Beta Glucan, Panthenol, Fermented Sugar, Royal Jelly, Organic Holistic Honey Blend™, Potassium Sorbate, Essential Oils of Rosemary and Lavender.

This sounds interesting. I love that it puts on the lights (shines), but I worry about stripping my hair, as well. hmm ~jk

Marta, you might want to check out their conditioner because it contains Phenoxyethanol, and I’m so upset because I love this product, and didn’t even know that ingredient was even in there. :(
