Velashape is a cellulite treatment that recently changed its name from Velasmooth to mark that the machine has been significantly upgraded. This can only be a good thing because Velasmooth looks rather like my Bosch vacuum cleaner and by all accounts was as about as effective.

Velasmooth had an impressive pedigree. It was invented by the doctor who holds that patent for Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) and another chap who is described as a “master physicist” (not just any old physicist). Vellasmooth and its successor, Velashape, harness a technology called elos. This turns out to be a combination of bi-polar radio frequencies and optical energy (either IPL or laser). Its supposed to be safer and more effective than just laser or IPL and it has been FDA cleared for treating cellulite.

Fabulous. Except that it doesn’t seem to work very well. I found numerous dermatologists bemoaning the investment made in a Velasmooth machine. “Its taking up too much room in my broom closet,” says one. The only advocate I could find says that Velasmooth does work if you have two sessions a week (each an hour long) for a minimum of eight weeks.

Those who have upgraded to Velashape say that the new machine is much faster and can produce results in about half the time of the old Velasmooth. One derma says he is getting good results by combining the Velashape with Mesaderm (a form of mesotherapy but without the needle).
