The name is nothing if not audacious: WOW This Cream Is Really Good. And, for that matter, the promise is bold: it will be “your only, ultimate face cream”. Of course I was skeptical. Now, after a couple of months of testing, I’d have to admit: this cream is really good.

The founder of WOW is based in Japan and the product is made in Switzerland. The sensibilities of both nations seem to me to be all about a precise attention to detail and WOW’s formula lives up to this.

What I love about using WOW is that the rich, active-packed formula doubles up (as promised) as serum and moisturizer. It does a very good job of smoothing crepey skin and I am particularly pleased with the creamy look that my formerly crinkly neck is getting. The generously sized bottle with a little going a long way means that it doesn't feel extravagant to give hands and nails a pump. The effect is so good that this is now a go-to for hands, neck and face. About as all-in-one as it gets.

It is hydrating even for dry patches and rich enough for areas – such as the neck and décolleté – that need a heavier cream. By the same token, men (with their thicker skins) will drink this cream up. It is worth noting that WOW is not greasy, but should be given at least five minutes before apply sunscreen or make up.

The most dominant active is niacinamide, a derivative of Vitamin B3 that suppresses melanin from reaching the surface of the skin and protects the skin from further UV damage.

I was interested to see CM-glucan, a natural yeast polysaccharide that strengthens the skin barrier and stimulates the immune system. It promotes collagen synthesis and even soothes symptoms of eczema.

Another ingredient that was new to me is Longevicell. Derived from myrtle, it is supposed to encourage cellular longevity, regulate signalling pathways while limiting glycation. Another botanically sourced active is Suflorawhite (from cress) and it is one of several skin brighteners in WOW.

Peptides include collagen-boosting Matrixyl 3000, the neuropeptide Argireline, and Eyeseryl, which is for dark under eye circles.

The well-behaved pump is worth a call out. Airless pumps, to the endless frustration of brands and their consumers alike, are temperamental. WOW uses an airless bottle that uses a pouch rather than rising pump. This presumably accounts for the extremely accurate and smooth action.

Preservatives include disodium EDTA and phenoxyethanol, both potential toxins. The only other thing I would caution new users is that WOW has a strong fragrance. Although it is based on natural spice ingredients, it may be a little too pungent for some.

This aside, I think WOW manages to differentiate itself as a great all rounder – recommended for all who want to simplify their regimen, or just use a really good cream.
