Dr. Dennis Gross C+ Collagen Brighten and Firm Vitamin C Serum
2017 Best for Wrinkles
Dr. Dennis Gross C+ Collagen Brighten and Firm Vitamin C Serum was designed to transform tired-looking skin into a radiant, healthy-looking complexion. The gel-serum combines the brand’s proprietary vitamin C technology with an energy complex — composed of CoQ10, superoxide dismutase, carnitine and niacinamide — to fuel cells for increased collagen production and accelerated repair. Suitable for all skin types, but especially ideal for mature skin, it instantly adds suppleness and radiance while refining lines and wrinkles, increasing firmness and lessening the look of dark spots over time. After a month of testing, Marta, the founder of Truth In Aging, saw a serious improvement in the quality of her skin.
C+ Collagen Brighten and Firm Vitamin C Serum uses 3-O-Ethyl Ascorbic Acid, a stable form of vitamin C that penetrates deep into the skin, helping to both minimize and prevent the appearance of hyperpigmentation, fine lines, and wrinkles. CoQ10 is needed for basic cell function and supports collagen production. Other powerful antioxidants, including niacinamide and superoxide dismutase, neutralize the damaging effects of free radicals. Carnitine is related to metabolism of the skin and is thought to help reduce inflammation. In addition, collagen amino acids aid in strengthening skin’s fibers. Daily use provides fast-tracked improvement of imperfections like dullness, dark spots, rough texture and lines. This serum is formulated without parabens or phthalates.
Tested and reviewed for at least 30 days by Marta:
Dr. Dennis Gross, a dermatologist in New York City, believes he has come up with a new approach to anti-aging skin care by treating what he calls “tired skin.” There’s much more to this theory than being washed out after a bad night (or a really good night, for that matter), and he is introducing a new line of products with the brand’s proprietary vitamin C technology and a collagen-boosting complex. Is he really on to something new? To find out, I tested the C+ Collagen Brighten and Firm Vitamin C Serum.
This review is being written after 30 days of testing, but I have to say that after only two weeks I was noting a very different look to my skin. It was the opposite of tired. It was actually glowing. I couldn’t believe how refreshed my skin looked. Two weeks later, lines were minimized and my skin felt firm. I’m actually putting that to the test as I write this by tapping and pinching my lower cheek. Tight as a drum. Dr. G has come up with something that really does move the needle, which leads me to the inevitable pun that with this serum, you can put off the needle.
So, before I run through the ingredients with you, a quick reprise of the tired skin theory. As Dr. Gross puts it, skin has a battery and it runs down. This battery is, in fact, mitochondria. “The powerhouse of the cell” has become the focus of a new frontier in the science of aging. As we get older, the mitochondria in our cells develop genetic mutations that cause them to either degenerate or kick the bucket. With our diminished ability to fix these mutations, the mitochondria die and thus our cells die.
C+ Collagen is the solution, according to Dr. Gross. Vitamin C has long been one of the good doctor’s favorite ingredients, as it is the only antioxidant that also helps collagen production. Indeed, vitamin C is a precursor to collagen and our bodies can’t make collagen without it. One of the vitamin C derivatives used in the formula is 3-O-ethyl ascorbic acid, a stable form that has also been credited with halting the melanin-biosynthesis pathway in skin, hence it can prevent hyperpigmentation.
The collagen aspect of the formula is in the collagen amino acids and carnitine. The amino acids arginine and carnitine form something called creatine, which in turn stimulates the skin to produce more collagen and elastin. The “energy complex” also includes the powerful antioxidants niacinamide, CoQ10 and superoxide dismutase.
Also worth a shout out is turmeric, an antioxidant and skin brightener. There’s also a flavonoid called quercetin, which is abundant in onion leaves and papaya shoots, as well as in guava. The thing about quercetin is that it may be a much more of a powerful antioxidant than was previously thought. Cornell University has a new way of measuring antioxidant potency called cellular antioxidant activity (CAA) that tests the antioxidant activities of a compound inside the cell itself. This is an approach that is deemed to be more accurate. Of all the flavonoids, quercetin had the highest CAA value.
There are the usual suspects in the form of harsh preservatives and denatonium benzoate, a bitter substance used in denatured alcohol. Nonetheless, my skin tolerated this serum perfectly well. Overall, I do think that Dr. Gross has come up with a breakthrough product that I will be keeping as part of my beauty arsenal. I intend to use the bottle until done (another couple of months, I should think) and will be interested to see if I keep my new-found glow while continuing to pass the tap and pinch tests. So far, C+ Collagen Brighten and Firm Vitamin C Serum is highly recommended.

I am actually VERY surprised that this serum won the award for best line smoothing serum. With the amount of denatured alcohol (as read in a previous article referring to bad forms of alcohol) in this product I am left perplexed.......

I recently started using Dr. Dennis Gross's product line. My first venture so far is his Ferulic + Retinol triple correction eye serum. After just a week, I am already seeing a difference in that my eyes don't look as tired. I would love to try his new C+ collagen brighten and firm serum to see if it can help even out the skin on the rest of my face so that it will look as great as my eyes!

I have used many products on the TIA site, but this one -- by far -- has shown the most dramatic increase in my skin, For me, it's been amazing. I actually already had fairly good skin but wanted something to help with the sagging that comes with age (almost 60). From the first week, my skin was more even and soft as a new baby's bum! I've had more compliments on my skin than I've ever had. Since I didn't have much in the way of wrinkles, I can't comment on that; but my "11's" are definitely not as deep. I will never run out of this product; another thing is that it has lasted me for several months! A very nice size bottle for the price!
I was wanting to find a new vitamin C product, and firming my skin is a constant focus at 69. I liked the way the serum went on right away. The first 4 or 5 times I applied it, I felt a tingling and warming sensation. Not really bothersome, it felt like it was doing something. I no longer get that sensation. After 12-14 days I noticed that my skin looked brighter and it was noticeably firmer along the jawline. Each day I saw improvement. The results were so dramatic, I went on TIA and bought a full size of Dr. Dennis C+ Collagen so I could continue the routine and maintain the results. It was a best of 2017 product so I was happy to get a discount on the price, but I would have purchased it anyway, because I didn't want to stop using it and my sample was getting low. 5 stars
Other formulations I have tried include the revered SkinCeuticals serum and one from Timeless Skincare, These did not work out for me due to irritation that occurred especially around my nose. Despite a different gel-like texture and the additional antioxidants of niancinamide, CoQ10 and superoxide dismutase my cheeks and chin were immediately bright red and warm to touch -ugh. I then got frustrated and decided to try my neck and chest because I could not pass up all those wonderful ingredients - even thinking it was foolish at the time. But no, the serum has done wonders to improve my neck skin texture and tightness. It does seem smoother and softer to the touch. It has not improved the hyperpigmentation on my chest. The collagen boosting benefits would no doubt come along further down the road. I will not repurchase as I prefer something I can use all over not a particular area.

I am surprise this won the Best of the Year award since there are very few community reviews and they are not good.
I'm 65 yrs old, with dry, dehydrated skin, loss of elasticity and some sensitivity. Since my skin LOVES DDG ferulic+retinol serums and the triple peptide oil, I added this facial serum for daytime use and wanted to love it also. After 2 weeks, I stopped using it because my skin did not react well. My skin "felt" tighter during the day after application, but I experienced a couple of breakouts (I normally do not have any), my fine lines became more visible, my face looked and felt drier and generally uncomfortable.
Hi Pam - for years I have avoided vitamin C, but these newer formulations are not drying. Overall, I haven't found this serum to be drying at all. I do not need additional moisturizer. However, my skin is slightly oily. If you have dry skin, you may need to apply moisturizer as well.
This product sounds amazing. I have 2 questions: My 65 yr old dry, dehydrated skin has always reacted badly to products that contain L-ascorbic acid (other forms of VC have been fine and non-irritating.) Is the 3-O-Ethyl Ascorbic Acid likely to be non or less irritating than the L ascorbic? Is it possible this product might exacerbate dryness in mature skin such as mine? (I noticed some exfoliators and alcohol).
