Jenetiqa's formula contains arbutin which inhibits melanin formation due to its tyrosinase inhibitory activity, gently evening skin tone without irritating skin. A new brand (that is to say, new to me) caught my eye a couple of months ago at an industry award event. Called Jenetiqa and hailing from Texas, it met the criteria that tends to grab my attention: passionate women founders, a focus on powerful ingredients and an eco-friendly as well as skin-friendly philosophy. Première Essence is a serum for face, neck and even hands, as well as a targeting cream for dark spots and other manifestations of hyperpigmentation. Using it daily for about five weeks, I found it excellent for resurfacing the skin and taking down some unsightly blotches that have been forming on my outer right cheek.

Première Essence seems to be providing gentle exfoliation, while not irritating my sensitive skin and, overall, leaving my complexion smoother and brighter. Somewhere on the gold packaging it says “radically energizing” —and that seems to sum it up.

Première Essence has three forms of vitamin C and skin brightening arbutin and licorice, as well as mulberry (which contains a compound that is a natural form of arbutin). I also like the inclusion of ellagic acid, an antioxidant that is found in fruits and vegetables and has recently come under scientific scrutiny for its cancer-fighting potential. On the skin, it is thought to protect against oxidative stress and UV damage.

Although there is some silicone and synthetic fragrance, the few non-actives are seemingly benign, such as ethylhexyl isononanoate. The preservative is the potential neurotoxin, phenoxyethanol and sodium hydroxide, a strong irritant, which is the pH adjuster. However, the good far outweighs the bad, and the formula lives up to Jenetiqa’s goal of “sustainability.”
